Heat-pump tank water heater and insulated connections in a residential research installation

Ask for the diagnosed fault

A cold shower does not automatically mean the tank needs replacement. Describe the symptom, fuel type, model and any visible leakage. Ask the business to explain the confirmed fault and whether the proposed repair addresses it. Do not remove protective covers or attempt gas or electrical work.

Compare suitable options

For replacement, ask how capacity, recovery and installation constraints match household use. A heat-pump unit can require different space and condensate arrangements. Tankless options may involve fuel, electrical or venting changes. Have the installer explain those interfaces before comparing equipment prices.

List every installation item

The written scope should address removal, new equipment, connections, testing, required permits and inspections, and any work by another trade. Ask whether making good walls or floors is included. Confirm the exact model and warranty terms with the business providing the equipment.

Keep a useful handover

Ask for operating guidance, accessible shutoff information and the maintenance instructions for the installed model. Save the invoice, model and serial information, and inspection records. A website guide cannot establish that a particular unit is safe or correctly installed.

The water-heater service guide outlines installation questions beyond the appliance. Compare the assessment and proposed remedy using the written quote checklist.
